Nói chung thì em thấy Style của 3 thứ này khá lằng nhằng, ai phân biệt giúp em với nhất là chị Laura của em

"dân gothic thường gây cho người ban đầu mới gặp cảm giác họ là những người lạnh lùng, xa cách. Tạm là vậy, còn cái Punk phân biệt với Emo thì còn nhập nhằng, em chưa hiểu dc Ai giúp em với ạ

E hèm, nói về punk trước nhá, vì nó là cội nguồn của mọi tội lỗi.

Punk



Ban đầu, punk là 1 phong trào văn hoá, xuất hiện vào khoảng năm 1976, 1977 tại Mỹ, sau đó lan qua Anh trước khi xâm chiếm cả thế giới. ^^ Phong trào punk là phong trào nổi dậy chống lại những giá trị có sẵn trong xã hội, phong trào này cổ vũ sự biểu hiện cảm xúc 1 cách đột ngột và tự nhiên. Phong trào này cũng là 1 phong trào tiên phong trong việc đổi mới âm nhạc và văn hoá, sự nổi dậy của 1 sức mạnh mới, đồng nghiã với sự tự do sáng tạo tối đa.

Từ punk trong tiếng anh có nghĩa là không có giá trị, từ này được chấp nhận 1 cách mỉa mai bởi những punker vì họ là những người muốn phá đổ những giá trị có sẵn. Trong những năm 50, những punker được gọi là bồ nhí của những người tù mới ra tù. Phong trào punk hay được gắn liền với phong trào anarchist và phong trào alternatif (anti-militarism, feminism, vegetarism, v.v.).

Cần nói thêm là tại những nước mà phong trào skin head nổi lên khá mạnh, những punker là những người lên tiếng bênh vực những nạn nhân của bọn skin, người ta hay thấy những băng đảng skin wánh nhau với những băng đảng punk.


Emo

Emo là 1 thể loại nhạc con của punk-hardcore. Nhưng từ khi từ "emo" được sử dụng, người ta đã dùng nó để chỉ những phong trào tự do xuất phát từ 1 gốc rễ chung.

Ban đầu, từ emo được dùng để chỉ thể loại âm nhạc xất phát từ sàn diễn hardcore của Washington D.C vào giữa những năm 1980. Sau đó, từ "emocore" (từ tắt của emotional hardcore) được dùng để chỉ thể loại âm nhạc phổ biến của cà vùng Washington và những vùng phụ cận. Những ban nhạc thời đó được coi là những ban emocore bao gồm: Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party... Thời tàn đầu tiên của đợt sóng emo là vào đầu thập niên 90 với sự tan rã của những ban nhạc trên.

Vào giữa thập niên 90, cơn sóng emo được làm sống lại bởi Fugazi, 1 ban nhạc của Ian Mackaye, con đẻ của đợt sóng emo đầu tiên. Nhưng lúc này, phong trào emo gần với phong trào independent rock hơn là phong trài hardcore lúc đầu. Điều này được khẳng định với sự xuất hiện của 2 nhóm: Sunny Day Real Estate và Texas Is The Reason. Âm nhạc của họ gần với indie rock, du dưong và đỡ lộn xộn hơn. Nhưng đến cuối thập niên 90, những ban tiên phong này, 1 số cũng tan rã, số còn lại tự thay đổi mình để đến với phần đông khán thính giả (mainstream). Những ban nhạc mới, bắt chước những âm thanh dành cho phần đông khán thính giả này. Lúc này, từ emo chỉ còn được dùng để chỉ phần đông những ban nhạc này, và trở thành 1 tính từ chỉ chất nhạc của những ban nhạc chứ không còn là 1 từ chỉ 1 thể loại nhạc nữa.

Gothic Rock

Gothic Rock được sinh ra tại London sau sự xuống dốc của phong trào punk với những ban nhạc như Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure và Joy Division. Phong trào gothic đề cao sự hướng nội và sự lo lắng cho bản thân, cuốn hút bởi nỗi buồn, cái chết và trào lưu lãng mạn. ^^

Có ý kiến cho rằng từ "emo" là bắt nguồn từ những lần các nghệ sĩ dòng nhạc này tự nhiên trở nên xúc động thái quá (emotional) ngay trong buổi biểu diễn. Chả biết là lăn lộn gào thét khóc lóc thế nào mà làm nên cái từ này nữa...

sis Laura cho em biết thêm về dân Gothic đi ạ, em quan tâm có nhiêu đó thôi .

sis ơi, qua bài trên về nhạc thì em cũng nắm dc sơ sơ rồi nhưng mà em vẫn không hiểu lắm tâm lý và cảm nhận của dân emo và dân punk. Tâm lý 2 dân đó khác nhau điểm nào ạ ( giống như cái post trên cùng của sis về dân Gothic đấy ạ ). Punk là muốn break rules còn emo là không control dc bản thân và luôn cảm thấy chán nản. phải không ạ ?

Ừm. ^^ Emotional muh. Cái đó gọi là rock sến. (jk) emocore nghe du dương hơn hardcore nhưng giai điệu cũng lộn xộn như hardcore. Dân emo thường nhạy cảm, nhưng cách biểu hiện cảm xúc của họ đột ngột và mạnh mẽ hơn dân goth. Khác với dân punk, dân emo không có tư tưởng nổi loạn, muốn lật đổ những giá trị xã hội đang tồn tại.

Kiểu cảm xúc thất thường như bọn emo thì tiếng Việt mình hình như gọi là "đồng bóng" thì phải. Mà sao trông bọn Gothic (trừ romantic gothic) ăn mặc cũng quái đản giống punk thế nhỉ.

Hi hi anh Cồi, nhìn khác chứ anh. Bọn Punk cũng tóc quái di6, cũng đục đẽo nhưng không trang điểm giống bọn gothic. Thim cái nữa, bọn punk chơi trang phục thường gồm jean, baggy sơ mi khá tả tơi cò bọn gothic chơi baggy đen, latex, da đen, style thanh lịch chứ không có tả tơi.

em đang viết 1 bài về emo, nhưngq quả thật là tâm trạng của họ ( thể hiện qua các câu trên ) khó nói quá... cứ hỗn tạp và rối bời sao đó >.<

mà khổ, nói đến Gothic Rock thì không thể không nói về Gothic Metal >.<

1 bài viết sưu tầm >.< chẳng biết đúng hay sai

Nhạc Em0 thật chất là thuộc dòng Hardcore Punk nhưng lời nhạc thì sensitive ( nhạy cảm) và emotive, nỗi buồn ( sadness), love, anger...
Emo được sinh ra từ tro tàn của 1 band Hardcore punk tên là Minor Threat ( Washington D.C). Khi nhóm nhạc này tan rã, những thànnh viên cũ lập nên những nhóm mới có tên là Embrace, Rites Of Spring và Fugazi---những nhóm này chính là những nhóm nhạc Em0 đầu tiên. Họ vẫn chơi hardcore nhưng lời nhạc có phần trầm hơn, emotive hơn, thay vì chửi rủa chính trị ( như những dòng Punk khác). Nhưng để dòng được biến đổi để nhiều người có thể nghe đưôc, Christie Front Drive thêm chất Pop vào như là giai điệu hấp dẫn, về phân lời bài hát thì giữ nguyên ( Em0 lyrics).
Hiện nay, Em0 đã hoàn toàN Khác, ko còn giữ chất Hardcore như trước

theo kinh nghiệm em thì emo nhẹ hơn gothic nhiều, cả về giai điệu, nhịp lẫn nội dung. đề tài của emo thì phong phú hơn gothic. nhưng nghe gothic vẫn thích hơn chứ. ^_^

Phong trào 'tôn sùng' nước mắt

Mỗi khi nhóm 5 người của Hoài Thu (sinh viên năm thứ 2, ĐH Văn hoá) xuất hiện trước “công chúng” thì họ giống như một nhóm nhạc nào đó hơn là những sinh viên đại học đang đi dạo ngoài giờ.


Người có lối sống Emo.

Họ có mặt ở đâu là “chói chang, rực rỡ” ở đó bởi những bộ đồng phục hoặc đỏ rực, hoặc trắng muốt cùng với kiểu trang điểm như diễn viên tuồng. Ngạc nhiên đến mức khó hiểu là khi nhóm bạn của Thu nói chuyện đến một tình huống nào cảm động họ có thể cùng một lúc khóc nức nở. Họ tôn sùng nước mắt, tình yêu tinh khiết và làm tất cả điều đó để “tinh khiết hoá” tâm hồn mình.

Đó là những người theo lối sống gọi là Emo. Hiện nay, lối sống văn hoá “mới lạ” trên đang xâm nhập vào Việt Nam, mà đối tượng “tiếp thu” chủ yếu là những người còn rất trẻ.

Nhận dạng một nhóm Emo

Đầu tiên mọi người thấy, Hoài Thu có những dấu hiệu “khác thường” về mặt tâm lý, trong sinh hoạt cá nhân, tập thể thậm chí ngay cả trong cách ăn mặc cũng cho thấy cô chẳng giống ai. Hầu như Thu rất ít tiếp xúc với người trong lớp, cả với mọi người trong phòng ở KTX. Suốt ngày Thu chỉ nằm vùi trên giường tầng hoặc ra sân thượng KTX “ngồi thiền” cùng với chậu hoa của mình.

Thi thoảng KTX lại được “giật mình” bởi đang nửa đêm vang lên tiếng khóc ai oán của Thu. Bạn bè hỏi, Thu không trả lời và có thể ngay tức khắc cười nói như không có chuyện gì. Thi thoảng thấy Thu đi cùng với một số người bạn cùng lứa ở một số trường đại học và hầu như bạn của Thu cũng “cùng dòng” như Thu từ “thể xác đến tâm hồn”.

Về vẻ bề ngoài Thu và nhóm bạn trông giống một số thành viên văn hoá nhóm Goth mà người ta hay nhắc đến, nhưng không có sở thích tụ tập nhau ở nghĩa trang và mơ ước được lên thiên đàng giống như người thuộc nhóm này. Mục tiêu chính của nhóm Thu là tìm cho mình một tình yêu tinh khiết và “nồng nàn như những giọt nước mắt”.

Hoài Thu nói: “Bọn em đều có chung một quan niệm về tình yêu là được ngập sâu trong cảm xúc và rất lãng mạn. Bọn em sẽ rất đau khổ nếu không được đáp lại tình yêu. Xem tình yêu là tình cảm thiêng liêng bởi thế một thành viên trong bọn em khó có thể nói là nó đang bình thường vào lúc trái tim đang tan nát".

Nhóm 5 người của Thu có hai nam và ba nữ. Mỗi khi nhóm bạn của Thu đã “an tọa” ở một địa điểm nào đó là ngay lập tức “nhập hồn” như những người lên đồng. Họ dẫn mọi người đi từ chuyện lạ này đến chuyện lạ khác khiến người ngoài khó mà hiểu được họ đang nói gì. Chẳng hạn họ đang nói chuyện về những bộ trang phục của các ca sĩ có thể chuyển hướng ngay sang lĩnh vực giới tính hay điện ảnh. Đặc biệt khi nói đến một tình huống nào cảm động họ có thể cùng một lúc khóc bù lu bù loa như những cô cậu đang học mẫu giáo bị ai đó bắt nạt.

Các Emo nói gì?

Một nữ Emo có tên là Thảo Thương trong nhóm của Hoài Thu khẳng định: “Tôi không ngại khóc cho thoả lòng nếu có một điều gì đó làm cho trái tim tôi rung động, bởi nó liên quan đến cuộc sống chứ không đơn thuần chỉ là những gì tôi nghe được. Nó giúp tôi cảm nhận và trải nghiệm với những gì tôi muốn. Làm được điều đó tôi tự thấy mình thật hạnh phúc”.

Đình Tuấn, 17 tuổi, một thành viên nam sau khi xem cảnh nhân vật nữ Ưn -sơ chết trong phim Trái tim mùa thu của Hàn Quốc đã “ăn không ngon, ngủ không yên” ngày ngày một mình thơ thẩn ra bãi sông Hồng ngồi khóc tỷ tê như trẻ con. Thi thoảng Tuấn lại than vãn hệt nhân vật nam chính Chun -sơ: “Ưn -sơ à! Anh yêu em” nghe mà thật não lòng. Sau khi chứng kiến cảnh ấy, nhiều người tỏ ra “sợ hãi” trước biểu hiện tâm lý của Tuấn, cho rằng Tuấn bị tâm thần.

Một thành viên nam khác trong nhóm là Khương lại “phong cách hơn”. Thích vuốt keo cho tóc dựng ngược, thích gam màu nóng như đỏ, xanh đậm và nhạc “sến” nên luôn “Săn tìm” những gì “nổi trội” hợp với sở thích của mình để thoả mãn. Sau một thời gian truy cập Internet, tiếp cận với phong cách sống của các đối tượng cùng “gu” với mình đã biểu hiện lối sống Emo ngày một rõ ràng hơn, “khác người” hơn. Chẳng hạn trừ khi gặp các thành viên nhóm, Bá chỉ mặc đồ đen, đi giày đen, tất đen như “võ sĩ Ninja” và tiến tới “em còn nhuộm răng đen nữa” - Bá nói.

Văn hoá, trào lưu hay học đòi?

Tên gọi Emo bắt nguồn từ “emotion” (xúc cảm) là một trào lưu sống dựa theo cảm xúc. Biểu hiện của trào lưu văn hoá Emo là “tôn thờ” chán nản, buồn rầu, rất dễ bị tổn thương của một số lớp trẻ trên thế giới hiện nay.

Không khó để nhận ra người theo văn hoá Emo vì hầu hết đều thể hiện trước tiên ở cách ăn mặc, trang điểm rất “nổi và trội”: bôi mắt màu snág, quấn khăn rách, mặc đồ đồng màu đen hoặc đỏ, tóc tai dị thường… Emo nam thường là những người rất gầy và cũng trang điểm như sơn móng tay một màu hoặc đen, hoặc đỏ và vẽ mắt. Emo nữ thường trang điểm cho mái tóc những thứ rất cầu kỳ như cặp tóc, băng đô…

Giữa đám đông họ có thể hét hay khóc toáng lên không cần biết đến mọi người xung quanh. Đặc biệt đáng chú ý ở chỗ trạng thái tâm lý giữa buồn - vui, khóc - cười có thể diễn ra trong một khoảnh khắc rất ngắn mà ngay cả diễn viên nổi tiếng cũng khó có thể nhập vai hiệu quả như họ.

Ở Nga người ta gọi nhóm văn hoá này là: Những đứa trẻ Emo. Về bản chất, lối sống Emo thực sự (chứ không phải là học đòi) là một lối sống khá lành mạnh. Sống bằng cá tính riêng nhưng bộc lộ tình cảm rất sâu sắc. Họ khó hòa đồng nhưng lại rất nhạy cảm, thích chia sẻ với người khác hơn là người khác chia sẻ với mình. Người Emo cũng có những nhu cầu như: muốn kết bạn, muốn yêu, mỉm cười và khóc, tới rạp xem phim, xem ca nhạc… Tuy nhiên, theo một số chuyên gia tâm lý Nga cho rằng: người thuộc nhóm văn hoá Emo cảm nhận thế giới quanh họ với nhiều cảm xúc hơn.

Trên thực tế ở Việt Nam đã có người Emo nhưng tụ thành nhóm mới chỉ ở dạng còn “tiềm ẩn” manh nha, lẻ tẻ. Tuy nhiên thực tế cho thấy ngày một nhiều thanh thiếu niên có xu hướng “sống Emo”.

Làn sóng văn hoá Emo mới chỉ “lan” chứ chưa tràn ngập sâu rộng trong đời sống cộng đồng người Việt nên chưa thể khẳng định chắc chắn về sự liên hệ giữa những người có lối sống văn hoá Emo để lập thành hội hay nhóm Emo cụ thể. Hoặc có cũng rất ít cho chúng ta bắt gặp. Chính vì thế rất cần sự tìm hiểu và nghiên cứu của các nhà khoa học về “lối sống văn hoá mới” này, nhằm thanh lọc, phân loại tốt xấu, qua đó dung hoà cái đã có với cái mới, cái hay của nhân loại, chủ động nắm bắt được lối sống của xã hội nói chung và lớp trẻ nói riêng, tránh tình trạng nền văn hoá nước nhà “bị xâm thực” bởi những luồng văn hóa “bẩn”, tiêu cực không phù hợp với văn hoá Việt Nam.

Mình thấy giống học đòi hơn. Những ng` có tâm hồn đẹp, có trái tim biết rung động trước cái đẹp và những cảm xúc đẹp chân chính ko nên và ko thể là ng` có thói quen "phô trương" - show off đến thế

The History of Goths

The original Goths were a Germanic tribe that swept through Western Europe, conquering small villages with force. As a result of the collapsed Roman Empire, the term Gothic became synonymous with barbarism and signaled the advent of the Dark Ages. Later, critics applied the term to a style of medieval architecture by critics who regarded it as similarly barbaric and uncultured. The early embrace of Gothic style was a self-conscious rebellion against good taste and good sense of the age. As a cultural term, the diverse style was initially dismissive, reminding people of how the Dark Ages had replaced the classical glories of Rome with uncivilized barbarity.

Revived Goth Movement

What began as a reaction to conservatism and conformity of the early 1980s, found new life in the ever-increasing anxiety and isolation of our culture. Music set the stage for the oppressed and led a lyrical statement against materialistic and superficial values of mainstream society. The Goth movement embraces the romanticism of darkness and the decadent persona. In its most basic form, Goth is an expression of alienation from societal expectations.
By the mid 80s, the term Gothic was employed to describe a new musical subculture, born from the ashes of the dying punk scene and nurtured on the dandyism of 1970s glam rock.

The Gothic individual is labeled with a hegemonic wardrobe of predominant colors. Influenced by late 18th and early 19th century styles, Modern Goths incorporate their own fashion with a universal tone of darkness: black leather, dyed hair, silver jewelry, distinct makeup and fishnet. Crushed velvet tends to be another Goth favorite. This form of expression is an approach to understanding the world. Through dark colors, they are able to reflect their innermost emotions as cultural art. Their extreme fashion is an outlet for their imagination.

Moreover, Goth's deliberate off-putting look is either a test for acceptance or a way to continue a life of melancholy that they are used to. Television reporters have incorrectly associated Goth with Satanism, white supremacy, and intolerance. Despite the stories of blood-sucking, Satan-worshiping, and virgin-sacrificing rituals, violence is not associated with the Gothic culture.

Often creative people, Goths enjoy intellectual discussions about the world, the evolution of religion and its place in modern society, but may not identify themselves with any particular belief; they usually proclaim themselves as agnostic. Teen Goths are more likely to be involved with the occult, Wicca, or some other form of alternative spirituality. Many feel that they do not fit into the arms of mainstream society. They find the light in the darkness and embrace it for all it?s worth. Some may have experienced a form of social isolation or rejection.

Being Goth is a form of tribalism, a way for people of similar interests and mindsets to find each other and have a place to belong. Like most tribes, Goths are often protective of their community and will keep out those who do not belong. Their company can be a welcoming and comfortable addition for those who accept them for who they are. They are full of patience and enthusiasm for people who are genuinely interested in finding out what Goths are about.
Despite their dark fashion and secluded personality, Goths are unusually gentle people with artistic and literary taste. Many enjoy reading dark literature such as Lovecraft, Stephen King, Poppy Z. Brite, and Anne Rice. Others have a passion for the artistic expression through personal writing. Dark poetry is a reformed style that raises eyebrows and may cause heads to shake in disapproval. Most poems that reflect internal feelings deal with loss and grief. Although depressing and hopeless, most Goth poets are able to capture a detailed emotion through a fascination with death and the supernatural.

Goth Literature

In the eighteenth century, musing authors such as the Marquis de Sade () and Mathew "Monk" Lewis gave birth to the golden age of Gothic literature. These stepping stones of grotesque and sexual images paved the road for modern dramatists.

Gothic literature's principle innovation lay in evoking the contrasting emotions of terror and pity. This use of distinction is the heart of Gothic art: light and dark, good and evil, sex and death. Realism and character development are of little concern compared to effect, marking Gothic literature by this shameless emphasis of style over content.

Gothic tales were once referred to as Romances to distinguish them from the suspense novel. By category, the romance novel was an unashamed work of the imagination, where exciting and entertaining the reader was more important than being realistic or instructive. The Gothic genre was later adopted by a generation of artists, writers, composers, and above all, poets who reveled in the reflective rebelliousness that society condemned.
The Marquis de Sade was a fan of the Gothic Romance genre. While imprisoned in the late seventeenth century for crimes of sexual abduction, de Sade wrote several novels and manuscripts depicting morbid sexual behavior. He is most famous for his 1791 novel, Justine and his prior (Moá, đọc xong thấy đau toàn thân và tự hỏi không hiểu sao con pé đó sống dai thế ), Les Journées de Sodome, an underground classic for over a hundred years.

Though his self-conscious efforts in the genre are disappointingly bland, Sade's infamous and often suppressed experiments (dark moods, perverse sexuality, scenes of incest, cannibalism, and blasphemy) have been marked as Gothic literature of the most extreme kind.
The Marquis's chief legacy is the term sadism coined twenty years after his death to describe the derivation of sexual pleasure from inflicting pain. His monstrous thoughts, preserved in the form of novels written to ease his boredom while incarcerated, were inspired by turbulent times of the Dark Ages.

Mathew Gregory Lewis first published The Monk in 1795. Savagely attacked by the critics for its sexual explicitness and blasphemous nature, Lewis was forced to tone down the text. This novel tells the story of Ambrosio, a famously virtuous abbot in early seventeenth century Spain who is seduced by a young beauty called Matilda, later revealed as a demon in human form.

Ambrosio slides into a life of vice, black magic, and murder, culminating in the rape of his own sister and murder of his mother. When retribution finally catches up with him in the fearsome shape of the Spanish Inquisition, Ambrosio devises his escape by summoning Lucifer himself.
The novel was condemned for shocking episodes that exhibited the perverted lust of a sadist. Critics labeled Lewis The Monk as the work of monster, an accusation leveled at Gothic artists ever since.

In one sense, Goth is the dark undercurrent of everyday existence, a twilight version of the daylight world. In another, it is sophisticated barbarism. It is a passion for life draped in the symbolism of death. It is a cynical love of sentiment. It uses darkness to illuminate. It believes duty is vain, and vanity to be a duty. It is the compulsion to do the wrong things for the right reasons. It is the unholy, the uncanny, and the unnatural. Goth is a fashion, a lifestyle statement, and freedom from a mundane world.

This is probably the hardest question any goth could try and answer, one may as well ask 'what is society?' as it has so many facets it defies any definitive explanation.

Goth in its simplest form, is a subculture. A group of people who feel comfortable within each others company. There is no specific thing that defines what you need to do or be to fit into the goth scene (except of course the implied black clothing). People in the goth scene all have different musical tastes, follow different religions, have different occupations, hobbies, and fashion sense.
Why do people become goths?

Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society.

However because of this rejection from 'normal' society, goths have banded together to associate with other free thinkers. This has a beneficial effect on both the individual and society as a whole. For the individual they have a sense of belonging, and friends they can associate with. For society it removes one more misfit filled with rage from society's streets.

This of course is not the case for all goths. Many goths today are goths for a variety of other reasons. They like the music, or the clubs are better, they have goth friends and joined in with them, or they just like staying up late nights and goths are the only ones awake to talk to.

The gothic stereotype

Many stereotypes of goths exist these days. It seems everyone has their own way to define 'what is goth'. From the stereotypes based on clothing to music right up to the stereotypes of all goths being satanists or part of some kind of cult. Categorically, all of these are false.

The goth scene is just as widely varied as society in general. There are many different professions represented in the scene, from highly skilled professionals like doctors and lawyers, to tradesman, to technically minded people to clerical workers. Many different musical tastes exist (and not all of them goth, there is a HUGE 80's following in the goth scene for some reason). The fashion varies vastly from goth to goth from the traditional flowing victorian style garments to the buckled and studded style regalia (also called industrial style, which is often closely related with goths, and have come to an understanding of co-existance, if uneasily at times).

How do I get into goth?

This is the simplest part of the page. Go check out our Community section over on the left, and use it to find out whats going on in your local area. Goths tend to be accepting and open minded. Just turn up to a club or event wearing all black and your already in the goth scene. You'll pick it up as you go along (just a hint though, lay off the vampire comments!).

The gothic sense of humour is highly developed, and often leans toward the satirical. Quietly laughing at the more idiotic and less tolerant factions of society that seem to think yelling out of cars at us makes them cooler. Goths have learned to laugh at themselves and see society in a much different light. They have had to, and it is a trait most would not give up.

Goths have for the most part (not unanimously of course, but mostly) dropped all forms of prejudice. Noone is afraid within the goth scene to come out as being gay, and noone has to hide their religion for fear of scorn from their peers or zealots wanting to convert them from the arms of Satan. In fact because of these facts (and the general lack of prejudice) the goth scene has a large proportion of gays/bisexuals, and followers of non-mainstream religions and views. This of course is the most important aspect of gothdom, and why most goths became goths in the first place, tolerance.

But they think weird!

Ah, but this is the beauty of goths. Most subjects that are taboo in 'normal' society are freely discussed and debated about. Death, religion, magick, mysticism, and many other topics that are only roached carefully outside of the gothic community. Most goths have realised that fear is only a reaction instilled in us by dogmatic propaganda, and once you realise there is nothing to fear from the topic, whats to stop you discussing it?

Goths often revel in the fear given to them by society as a whole. Often the behavior exhibited by society to them based on society's perception of them from stereotypes, rumour, etc are a constant source of entertainment. Of course, most of the rumours are totally unfounded, goths are people like everyone else, however when you already have a reputation, going for the shock factor is often far too tempting to see how much society at large is willing to believe (or deduce) with only a little encouragement.

This does not totally fall away once you get inside the scene unfortunately, and goths are all too often tempted to try for the shock factor within the scene (which turns out more tacky than shocking). Goths when you get down to it can be a rather pretentious bunch, trying for those extra 'goth points' on the gothier than thou scale, but it adds to the enjoyment.

History of Goth

Modern goth (ignoring where the name itself originally comes from) started in the early 80's as part of the punk subculture (which is itself was a rejection of most societal values, and anything considered part of the 'norm'). The phrase was coined by the band manager of Joy Division, Anthony H. Wilson, who described the band as 'Gothic compared with the pop mainstream'. The term stuck, and as punk eventually died, Goth survived and became its own subculture. The punk clothing and hairstyles mellowed, and the core 'rejection of society' attitude alone lived on in the gothic subculture. Over time this itself has been modified to be more of a 'no more blind acceptance of society's values' as opposed to rejection because it was there to be rejected (and because you could get away with it!).

Movies such as The Crow, and bands such as the Bauhaus helped establish the gothic image as dark, depressing, and even evil. As more and more 'dark' movies came out, numbers in the gothic subculture expanded, and there is now a gothic community in almost every major city around the world, and quite a number of towns have their own representative contingent. Nowdays there are more goth bands around than ever, and it has turned from an 80's phenomenon into a 90's way of life for many people. Unlike the punk subculture that it spawned from, there even exists a class of mature goths, still following the scene around even past their 20's and into their 30's and beyond.
